STATE MINIMUM WAGE: PROTECTING THE LOW PAID IN SOCIETY
Catholic Commission for Employment Relations Executive Director Anthony Farley said the introduction of a State Minimum Wage is a “significant achievement” for the
interests and welfare of low paid workers in New South Wales.
Mr Farley said this decision, handed down by the Industrial Relations Commission of New
South Wales on 27 June, “provides a minimum wage of $552.70 for adult employees within the
New South Wales industrial relations system whose employment is not covered by an award
or enterprise agreement. Before this decision, there was not a minimum wage for award-free
employees in New South Wales, and this may have resulted in these employees failing to
receive the annual increases awarded through the State Wage Cases.”
Mr Farley said “it is important to ensure that those employees in New South Wales who are
not covered by an award or enterprise agreement receive the same safety net minimum
wage as those employees who are covered by an award or enterprise agreement.”
“The Church, through its social teaching, upholds the dignity of workers and supports the
poor and vulnerable. The Church supports workers in their endeavours to achieve skills, gain
employment, raise a family and live independently. An adult should be able to earn a
minimum wage that allows them to support themselves and their family so that they do not
live in poverty.”
Mr Farley said the introduction of a State Minimum Wage “is a real way to help protect the
lowest paid employees and provide them with the opportunity to live their lives with respect
and dignity.”
“The Church’s dual role, as employer and provider of ongoing pastoral care to those most
marginalised in society, provides the Catholic commission for Employment Relations with a
unique perspective to comment on the need for, and impact of, the introduction of a State
Minimum Wage.”
